How does that work?

The European Commission (EC) and the Department for International Development (DFID) have commissioned ADRA-UK to implement various long-term development projects.

The projects are designed by ADRA-UK and proposed to the EC and DFID.

These projects are so called ‘co-financing’ projects.

This means that both the EC or DFID and ADRA-UK pay a portion of the cost of the project. For some projects ADRA-UK’s portion equals 25% of the total project cost. For others it is a lot less, e.g. 10%.

For example, a new food security project in Ghana will cost €1,319,568 to implement over a period of 20 months.

Now, for this project the EC is contributing €1,181,013 and ADRA-UK €113,855 – or just 10%.

In effect, for each pound we put towards this project the EC will give us £9 more to spend.

Another new project in Mongolia will help disabled children in two districts to get access to health and education.

The total value of the project is €499,000 with the EC contributing €374,000 and ADRA-UK €125,000.

In this case our share is 25% of the cost – for each pound we raise towards this project the EC will add £3.

On average, for our current EC and DFID co-financed projects, each pound ADRA-UK invests in these long-term development projects, is worth £6.
